I had heard about Shillong being called the “Scotland of the East” in countless places. Shillong is truly a natural beauty, surrounded by green hills and pine forests. This place gives you an amazing feeling when you step into its misty hills. It was one of the best soulful trips I’ve taken in India.

Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya, a state in northeast India, located at an altitude of 1,520 meters (4,990 feet) above sea level. It is famous for its waterfalls, lakes, colonial architecture, local music, and unique cultures.
Must-Visit Places I Explored in Shillong
This trip wasn’t just about ticking off tourist checklist, i went there to actually experience the air of Shillong. There are many places you must visit in 2025.
1. Umiam Lake (Barapani)
I started my trip by visiting Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani. The lake is surrounded by lush green hills, and a picturesque landscape. The moment i saw it for the first time, it looked like a painting to me. I sat there and enjoyed my time.
2. Elephant Falls
This place was recommended by almost by everyone, a stunning and long waterfall. Its name comes from a rock that once resembled an elephant. Carrying a raincoat and umbrellas are useless here during monsoon.
3. Shillong Peak
Shillong peak is located at an altitude of 1,965 m(6,449 feet). The clouds added to the beauty of this point, when they cleared, the entire city of Shillong spread out below me. It was a quiet, calm feeling to be up there at the highest point in Shillong.
4. Ward’s Lake
It gives you the vibe of a garden with boating facilities, the vibe was amazing being there. It’s an artificial lake situated in the city center, near Police Bazar.
5. Laitlum Canyon
This was my favorite place out of all the places i visited. It’s an hour away from the city, the canyon opens into a valley that feels infinite. The peak offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Meghalaya region.

Where I Stayed in Shillong(2025)
There were many hotels and homestays, but i chose a small homestay in Laitumkhrah, run by a warm Khasi family. One can easily find a good hotel or homestay in Shillong.
How to Reach Shillong in 2025
- By Air: Shillong has a small airport at Umroi, but flights are limited. I flew into Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport), which has daily connections from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata. From there, Shillong is a 3-hour cab ride.
- By Road: Shared tourist taxis run between Guwahati and Shillong every day. Roads are in good condition, though expect foggy stretches in monsoon.
- By Rail: Nearest station is Guwahati (100 km). Shillong doesn’t have its own railway line.
Best Time to Visit Shillong(2025)
I visited Shillong in August during the monsoon. The weather was misty, with roaring waterfalls, and frequent rain.
- Winter (Nov–Feb): you will get chilly, festive, clear skies — best for music festivals.
- Summer (Mar–Jun): the weather remains pleasant, and offers blooming landscapes.
- Monsoon (Jul–Sep): expect heavy rains, lush greenery, waterfalls at peak. Ideal for dreamers, not for those who dislike wet shoes.
Shillong isn’t a place to just see, it’s a place you feel. As I left Shillong, rain once again drumming on the car roof, I realized why it’s called the Scotland of the East. It’s not just about the scenery — it’s about the mood, the music, the warmth of its people, and the way clouds follow you wherever you go.
